UEFA board has confirmed their plans on finishing the champion’s league after they had a meeting today. It was revealed in a conference hosted on UEFA’s official site.
The champion league will be undergoing a few changes in order to finalize the season in a congested time. Instead of playing the matches in the normal way, Europe’s top club’s competition will be held after all national leagues have ended.
Dates for champion’s league confirmed
The second legs of the last 16 ties will be completed within the 7th and 8th of august. After which there will be no second leg matches, rather it will be a one-off match instead of the regular two legs matches.
The final will be played in Lisbon on the 23rd of August in Lisbon. After the competition is played completely, the next season qualifiers will be over one leg rather than two legs.
UEFA implements new substitution rule
UEFA also said that clubs can register three players additionally to compete in the champion’s league in August. But the players won’t be signings.
This has affected players like Hakim Ziyech. He won’t feature in the competition for Chelsea after already completing his signing from Ajax to Chelsea.
The board also made an announcement that teams can now make a total of five substitutions in a match which is similar to Bundesliga and the premier league.
UEFA decides Europa Competition date
The Europa League final will be held on August 21 in cologne. Places for the semifinal and quarterfinal are yet to be announced. There is a suggestion that all games should be played in Lisbon. It will be more like an international competition whereby Lisbon will be like the host.
UEFA considered also considered having fans in the field while matches are ongoing with the outbreak of coronavirus over some European countries.
It would be a boost if we could at least see a half-full stadium after a long while.
