Real Madrid former goalkeeper, Iker Casillas is returning to his former club, Real Madrid as an adviser to the club’s president, Florentino Perez. Casillas was expected to retire officially in the nearest future after his long term career. He will now his first step as an off-field staff in Real Madrid.
It has been five years since Casillas left the club due to the war of words with the club president. The former club goalkeeper looks up to return as an advisor to Florentino. The same role Zidane had before he became the manager of Madrid.
The news seems to be surprising to people after he left Spain in 2015. When he and the president’s relationship worsened. The information of Casillas going back to Madrid became known after the goalkeeper was reportedly discussing with the club in recent weeks. The idea of bringing the Spanish international back to Madrid links with Florentino Perez bringing the club’s legends back. While Zinedine Zidane stands as the club manager, Raul and Butragueno take the post as the club director and reserve team managers.
Casillas will hang his boot at the end of the season after Madrid and Porto both won their league titles. His wide range experience which he has gained while contesting for silverware at the highest reaches of the game can help him create vital ideas or information to Perez ahead of what could be difficult in the future for the club.
The 39-year-old Casillas announced his departure tearfully in a conference that was held by him without any representative from the club. His teammates were on a tour to Australia for the pre-season. However, the president didn’t attend the media gathering despite been in Madrid at that time. But Casillas will be joining the club after his final season with Porto. He made his first debut with Madrid at the age of 18 in 1999. He went on to enjoy 16 seasons with the club.
Casillas won five La Liga titles, four super cups, two Copa Del Rey. He also came out as a champions league winner three times.
