Barcelona President Jose Maria Bartomeu says that Xavi will be the coach for the club sooner or later but insists he stays with Quique Setien for now. Xavi rejected Barca’s offer in January after meeting with the club officials in Qatar for talks and the Spanish champions eventually made Setien as a replacement for Ernesto Valverde.
The Spanish 40 years old signed a new contract of a year with Al Sadd. However, he has a clause that allows him to discuss with Barcelona if the contract is available.
Barcelona has failed to impress since Setien replaced Valverde and is currently on the second position on the La Liga table. The situation with Barcelona retreating performance has led to speculations that Setien could be exchanged with Xavi at the end of the season. This means Xavi is likely to come back to Camp Nou as a manager. While Bartomeu has confirmed Xavi as a potential coach, the club president has thrown his support behind Setien.
Bartomeu announce Xavi as a potential coach
Bartomeu told TV3 “Xavi will be Barca’s coach sooner or later. But right now we are searching for a coach. We are with Quique Setien. Setien will coach the team in the champions league and the last La Liga games remaining. We have had an atypical season, when we play in august he will be our coach. If we defeat Napoli we will be in Lisbon.
Our will is to fulfil contracts and Setien has one. We went to Setien’s house to discuss the future, the plans we have for next season. He will be there probably and I am very interested to hear what is his thoughts. “He has got a lot of time for Riqui Puig and Ansu Fati. We have seen Pedri and Francisco Trincao in form, which means there is hope.
While Setien may still be safe for now, Xavi is getting ready for the chance to be in charge at Barca when the opportunity comes.
Xavi told sports in June, The biggest hope I have now is to be a coach at Barca and get Barca to winning ways again.
“I am a club man. I would like to return the right time to start a project from zero. I have said it uncountable times but I want to make decisions about football in Barcelona.
It vivid that after the elections the stage will be set, I am not ruling out anything.
They came for me in January, we were discussing. I told them the circumstances and times were not right.
