Manchester City are weighing up to offer Lionel Messi a longterm contract that would see him move to MLS partner club New York City FC after three years in the premier league.
The contract can also see Messi become an ambassador for the city football group. It is a holding company that has many clubs across the world including City and New York City FC. However, there is still a chance for Messi to help Mancity win the champions league. Mancity has missed out of the champions leagues since the club started.
Manchester City has been the most preferable club to sign Messi after he told Barcelona he wants to leave the club. Manchester City will do everything possible to complete the signing of Messi on a free transfer. But sources have said that there is a possibility of paying between €100 and €150 million. This could happen if Messi is unable to force an exit unilaterally.
According to the same sources, City could also include players such as Eric Garcia and Angelino in the potential deal. According to ESPN, Messi has consulted different legal experts regarding the clause in his contract. But he has not been able to gauge reading on the situation.
Messi makes an attempt of executing a clause in his contract that allows him to leave Barcelona on a free transfer. But the club insisted that the window for the clause has expired in June and could not be carried out. Messi believes the clause still exists because the season was extended due to the Corona virus-induced stop.
The issue might be taken to court but sources that are close to the issue expect that there should be an agreement between Messi and Barca. The agreement would involve Barca name at a reasonable price for Messi to leave the club. The money could be used to reinvest and boost Barca’s team.
