Lionel Messi scores the 700th goal of his career in style as Barca draw 2-2 against Athletico Madrid in Camp Nou on Tuesday. The argentine and six-time Ballon d’Or winner had played three consecutive matches and got no goal. He has been on his 699th goal since he started for country and club.
But it has always been a matter of time for Messi before he reaches the milestone. His goal came through a penalty that was given to Barca when Samuel Umtiti was brought down in the 18-yard box. Having scored the penalty, he secured his 700th goal in 861 appearances. Lionel Messi has scored 630 goals for Barcelona having played 723 matches.
He has scored 70 for his country Argentina with a total of 138 appearances. Lionel Messi joins Ronaldo as the only active player that have reached 700 goals while still playing. Messi has reached Ronaldo’s 700 goals in a shorter time. It took Ronaldo 112 matches more before he could reach hit the milestone. In other words, the Portuguese star played 973 matches before he reached 700 goals.
These record is coming from two of the most incredible players in football, but Messi edges over Ronaldo in the challenge. He still holds the record of the Ballon d’Or award with 6 and Christiano having only 5. However, there is still enough time for Ronaldo to level up. Ronaldo has an upper hand of getting an accolade for the award as Juventus is close to winning the Serie-A title. And Barcelona is not looking promising to win the league as they are one point behind Real Madrid with 33 played matches.
That would be decisive after the champions league has come to an end. Never the less, The Portuguese star still boasts of his recent goal record as the highest active goal scorer with his 728 goals since he began playing as a professional footballer.
Messi and Ronaldo now joins other legends of soccer to reach the milestone. The likes of Ferenc Pukas, Ger muller, Romario, Josef Bican, and Pele has done great during their time by hitting over the limit.
