Barcelona Captain Lionel Messi has stalled talks to sign a new contract at the club. The Argentine international is adjudged to be angry about recent media stories linking him with the issues affecting the club’s La Liga title aspirations this season.

Reports claim Messi is about to leave the Camp Nuo in 2021 after his contract expires next summer but nobody knows where the Barcelona star will be headed next year. He has been linked with Ernesto Valverde’s dismissal in early January before the break due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Barcelona star is also frustrated about his side’s lack of quality after his team’s back to back draws with Athletico Madrid & Celta Vigo. The 33-year-old and his father, Jorge, had begun talks with Barcelona over a contract renewal which was signed in 2017. The discussions were halted & he wishes not to continue. This development has sparked fears that the club might lose its long-serving star.

Lionel Messi netted his 700th career goal on Tuesday in the 2-2 draw with Athletico Madrid. The Catalonia giants now trail Real Madrid by four points with five matches left to play. Meanwhile, Barcelona has been hit with an injury crisis ahead of their weekend clash with Villarreal.

Umtiti’s knee injury

Barca has confirmed that the defender, Samuel Umtiti, has suffered a knee injury ahead of their La Liga fixture on Sunday night.

The club stated in its official website that the French international will undergo consecutive treatment. He may not feature in the match against the Yellow Submarines at the El Madrigal stadium. The club further stated that the Barcelona defender’s return will be based on how fast he recovers from the injury.

Umtiti was not available for in the game against Athletico Madrid that ended in a draw. He has made 18 appearances for the club in all competitions so far this season. His last appearance for Quique Setien’s men was in Balaidos where the Catalan club played a 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo last week.
