Edouard Mendy is having his medical at Chelsea after the Blues agreed on a deal worth £22m for the goalkeeper. The deal is said to be completed in 24 hours following his medical and personal terms finalizing. The 28 years old goalie is set to sign a contract that will see him stay in Stamford Bridge for five years. And will compete with current goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for the number 1 jersey.
There has been a lot of pressure on Lampard to bring a new goalkeeper after Kepa made two mistakes in their last two matches. Chelsea also had an interest in Lille’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan but the price tag worth £32m puts the blues behind the contract. Chelsea’s technical director, Peter Cech has strong links with Rennes and has been part of the signing of Mendy.
Edouard Mendy will be the seventh summer signing in the club after completing the signing of Timo Werner, Tiago Silva, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr, Hakim Ziyech, and Kai Havertz.
Frank Lampard has not given up on Kepa and still believes there is another chance for everyone to prove their worth but he is also happy to add competition in place.
Lampard comment on Edouard Mendy signing
When Lampard was asked about Kepa. He said, “I don’t know what benefit there is in the future, football is in your hand. Competition is regular. “We have brought Mendy up for that competition. It’s in everyone’s hands to be on the team.
“I think it is the hardest position, because of the individual nature of it. “I have to be sympathetic to that point. “Last year I changed a few times. “Its a different thought process. We are always striving for the best performance.
Mendy will be absent in the Carabao Cup third-round clash with Barnsley on Wednesday. But he could be in the premier league match against West Brom on Saturday. The blues are hopeful that Mendy proves to be successful as their goalkeeping acquisition from Rennes. Peter Cech was once part of the club in 2004.
