Sunday US Open men singles final saw Dominic Thiem take on Alexander Zverev in a match that was guaranteed a new grand slam champion. Although Dominic Thiem made a nervy start he later recovered from two sets and break down against Zverev to win 2-6,4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(6). The game lasted for four hours.
Thiem edged passes Zverev in a fifth-set tiebreaker that included many chances for Zverev to win and left the two players battling till the final moment. Dominic Thiem who is a 27 years old Austrian won his first-ever Grand slam in his fourth major final. Thiem who is a promising young star has failed to beat those aging giants and has now become the first currently active player. He is the first new Grand slam champion in his 20s to win after six years.
Zverev served for the match 5-3 in the fifth set, Thiem won the first two points to put the Zverev on the rope, Thiem later forced him into too many mistakes and the german was unable to close the door for the championship. Although Thiem won the tournament with the absence of Federer, Djokovic, and Nadal, his name will be written in the font as past champions. There was no discount in his check of $3 million as the winner. Novak Djokovic was disqualified after he mistakenly hit a lines judge with a ball.
