The Ballon d’Or for the world’s best player will not be carried out in 2020 due to the insufficient fair condition the coronavirus brought to football. The award has always been awarded by the French football since 1956.

Ballon d'Or

Argentine international Lionel Messi won the last award for men prize in 2019. While USA Megan Rapinoe won the award for the female best. Lionel Messi has gained the highest for male best with six awards with Ronaldo sitting in second place with five. The two all-time greatest players would have come in contention with other players with the likes of De Bruyne, and Lewandoski.

Following the postponement, every player has to wait including Lionel who was the last to take the award in 2019.

France football announced that there will no Ballon d’Or in 2020 due to ‘lack of sufficient fair conditions’. We did not want to put an indelible asterisk on the prize list as a trophy won in exceptional consequences due to the COVID-19 health crisis, it said.

Protecting the credibility and legitimacy of the award also means ensuring its flawlessness over time.

The French football also said they look forward to holding the award in 2021. But this year can be used to organize a vote forr the all-time greatest men’s XI.

The award that has seen the best footballers Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi edged pass other players will not be issued to any player.
